Maintaining your daily protein intake
Most of our body is made up of protein, it is one of the body’s basic building blocks. Hair, muscle, skin and connective tissues are mainly made up of protein and without it, we wouldn’t look so great on the outside and on the inside, our bodies would struggle to keep us free from disease and infection.
Our body is in constant need of good quality protein but unfortunately it cannot be stored therefore we need to maintain sufficient amounts of it every day. When protein is consumed, the body effectively breaks it down into amino acids that are used in the formation of a vast array of structural and enzymatic proteins. They make up the enzymes and hormones that control all chemical reactions in our bodies, and regulate activities like digestion, metabolism and body temperature, and present in the blood as antibodies – our defenders against disease and infection.
With a severe protein shortage our body would eventually draw on its own structural protein, such as the skeletal muscle tissue and would start breaking it down to use for other bodily functions.
So as you can see protein is needed to build and maintain all body tissue, inside and out, however with its level of functionality it is used up quickly and efficiently and determining how much we need on a daily basis is difficult. As our needs depend on our age, size, and activity level, we need to make a conscious effort to incorporate high protein foods, from the list below, within our diets to ensure our individual needs are met in relation to our lifestyles and daily activities. It is also fair to assume that if one increases their levels of physical activity, there protein level intake will also need to increase.
