Stress and your body

Feeling stressed is the body’s response to challenging situations and circumstances, nearly all of us feel it on a regular, if not daily basis and our bodies have a tendency to manifest that feeling in different ways.

A relentless headache, palpitations, sweaty palms are all symptoms of stress and moreover a sign from our bodies telling us to ‘slow down’, ‘take it easy’ and ‘be easy on ourselves’.

When stressed the body produces chemicals to prepare for a ‘fight-or-flight’ response, which gives us the energy to fight or run away in life threatening situations.  Although, most of us are not faced with life threatening situations often, and even when there is no danger to our life, many stressful situations trigger this response.

If we are stressed frequently, the body may suffer harmful effects and once the fight-or-flight response is triggered, the body may respond in the following ways:

  • Digestion slows down, redirecting blood to the muscles and brain
  • Breathing increases and supplies more oxygen to the muscles
  • The heart beats faster and raises blood pressure
  • Perspiration increases to cool the body
  • Muscles tense up to prepare for action

During times of pressure our nervous systems goes to work and uses extra B-complex vitamins and vitamin C and as it is important for us to reduce our stress levels to calm the nerves, we may need to supplement these vitamins being rapidly used up.

Nutri-Calm provides generous amounts of B-complex vitamins and vitamin C along with the herb Chamomile, which is recommended by herbalists for its ability to soothe the nerves- hence the reason why some people switch to Chamomile tea from regular tea and coffee especially when working in a stressful environment.
